Design Setting

Set within the heart of Bardon’s traditional character precinct, Project Gordon is a response to one of the most challenging sites we’ve worked with. Designed and built into a steep hillside, the home navigates complex terrain, heritage overlays, and the Traditional Development Character (TDC) code — all while delivering a bold and contemporary outcome.

Rather than resist the slope, the design embraces it. Spread across four levels, the home steps up the hill, carefully balancing privacy, function, and street presence. The material palette is restrained and intentional, allowing the form to recede in parts and stand proud in others, all while honouring the scale and rhythm of its surroundings.

Project Gordon is a study in resolve — proof that complex constraints can give rise to inventive, enduring design.

Lived Experience

From the moment you arrive at Gordon Street, there's a quiet sense of anticipation. Nestled into the steep Bardon hillside, the home doesn't shout for attention — instead, it draws you in slowly. The modest frontage gives nothing away of the four-level design that unfolds behind it, stepping up the hill to reveal a carefully choreographed series of spaces.

You enter through the garage, where a lift or internal stairs lead you up to the heart of the home. The second level is where the day truly begins — kids' bedrooms tucked to one side, a shared bathroom, and a cosy living zone that acts as a private retreat or an afternoon wind-down space. It’s calm, comfortable, and just removed enough from the action above to give everyone their own breathing room.

The third level is where the home opens up. Sunlight filters through large windows, illuminating the kitchen, dining, and main living spaces — all seamlessly connected. It’s where family life happens: weeknight dinners, slow Sunday breakfasts, spontaneous gatherings. Sliding doors peel back to reveal a deck that floats above the street, catching city glimpses and gentle breezes.

And then, at the very top — the sanctuary. The master suite is intentionally elevated, both literally and figuratively. It’s a quiet, luxurious space complete with walk-in robe and ensuite, separated just enough from the rest of the home to feel like a retreat. Step outside, and you’re met with the final surprise — a pool perched on the rooftop, offering a cool, private escape with uninterrupted views across the treetops and rooftops of Bardon.

Gordon Street is more than just a response to a steep site. It’s a layered experience — one that unfolds as you move through it, revealing moments of connection, solitude, and celebration. It’s a home designed to be lived in from the ground up, each level offering its own rhythm, its own purpose.
