HOCKEY

This Chelmer riverfront home is a complete reinvention born from necessity and shaped by the individuality of its owners. Severely flood-affected and constrained by regulations, the existing house couldn’t simply be replaced, it had to be transformed. The result is a bold, layered home rebuilt from the ground up, pairing resilient materials with a rich, dark palette and a deeply personal sense of character. Brick, concrete, Corten steel and timber form a robust base, while the new upper level opens to sweeping river views and a generous, modern way of living. Every space has been reconsidered, every detail intentional, creating a home that is as site-responsive as it is unmistakably theirs.

Design Setting

This renovation is a complete reinvention of an existing Chelmer riverfront home, one that began as a flood-affected structure and now stands as a deeply personal expression of its owners. The original house was heavily compromised by repeated Brisbane River flooding, and removing it wasn’t an option without triggering regulations that would have forced an entirely different outcome. Instead, the decision was made to rebuild from within: reinforce the ground level with flood-resistant construction, reconfigure the entire layout, and then construct a new residence above that responds properly to the river and the site.

The palette sets the tone immediately. Dark timbers sit against a calm base of whites, bringing a contemporary drama to every space. Brick, concrete, Corten steel and deep charcoal elements anchor the home back into the landscape. A double-height glass atrium draws natural light through the centre of the house, softening the heavier materiality and connecting the indoors to the garden.

Nothing in this home is generic. From the dark kitchen that feels carved into the structure, to the leather accents and custom timber pieces, to the tavern-style powder room where a brass monkey literally holds the light, every corner reflects the clients’ individuality. It is unapologetically theirs. A home rebuilt because of the river, but shaped around who they are.

Lived Experience

Living in this home is an experience shaped by contrast, strength and softness, weight and warmth, raw materials and refined detail, all anchored by the constant presence of the river. From the moment you step inside, the house feels grounded. The dark timbers, textured brickwork and deep charcoal tones give the architecture a calm, settled confidence, while the landscaping and glass atrium breathe light and movement through the centre of the plan.

As you move through the lower level, you feel the resolve of a home rebuilt for its environment. The concrete floors, brick walls and robust construction speak to the flood history of the site, yet the spaces never feel cold or overly engineered. Instead, they feel honest. Plants, natural textures and carefully styled pieces soften the structure, creating a warm threshold that leads you up into the main living areas.

The upper level opens dramatically. Here the house shifts from grounded to elevated, a complete transformation. The entire floor frames the river, and the scale immediately expands. The kitchen, dining and living areas are lined with dark cabinetry, dramatic stone, timber floors and leather accents. Despite the richness of the palette, the rooms feel effortless, with the river drawing your eye outward in every direction. Morning light settles across the dining area; golden evenings fall across the living room. Every daily rhythm is tied to that shifting waterline.

Small moments give the home its personality. The quirky tavern powder room with its brass monkey light. The quiet warmth of the fireplace corner, wrapped in brick and dark timber. The softness of filtered light along the gallery walkway. Each moment reminds you that this home wasn’t designed to fit a trend, it was designed for clients, unapologetically.

The master suite feels like a retreat perched above the river, with its own sense of calm away from the social spaces. The views are uninterrupted; the materials remain consistent; the tone is sophisticated without trying too hard. Even the circulation through the home. up the timber stairs, along the glazing, through pockets of greenery, reinforces a sense of journey.

Living here isn’t about grandeur. It’s about depth, texture and being connected to place. It’s the sort of home that reveals more each time you walk through it — a home rebuilt out of necessity, transformed through design, and now lived in with a sense of pride and meaning that belongs only to its owners.
