The right size home
A great home isn't measured in square metres. It's measured by how well it fits the way you live.
More and more, we're seeing people think differently about the size of their home. The cost of living has changed. The cost of construction has changed. The way families live together is changing too. And many clients are now asking a better question: not how big can we go, but how big does it really need to be?
That doesn't mean small for the sake of it, and it certainly doesn't mean a tiny home. Some of the homes we're designing right now are very large, and that's exactly right for the people who will live in them. Size isn't the problem. Wasted space is.
It's about designing every space with purpose. What does the house really need to do? Can a room do more than one thing? Are there spaces we simply don't need at all? Answer those questions honestly and the size of the home tends to take care of itself.
We now have clients walk through the door and tell us they'd be very happy with a beautiful, comfortable three bedroom home. Some have chosen a block that suits a home like that. Some already have a beautiful piece of land. Others have a Queenslander they love and want to work with, rather than turning it into the biggest house they possibly can. What they have in common is a focus on the design and the outcome, not the floor area.
A client on the Gold Coast is a great example. They live on a canal, where homes are often huge and full of space nobody really uses. They came to us wanting something different: a single level home to retire in. They didn't want to spend their time cleaning rooms they never used. They wanted something interesting, well designed and easy to look after.
We designed a home around them. There's a main suite for the two of them and a small office. Then there are two studio rooms, each with its own bathroom, big enough for someone to live in comfortably. When the children and grandkids come to stay, those rooms give everyone their own space. The rest of the time, the home is focused completely on how the owners want to live.
It responds beautifully to the land, it works exactly the way they need it to, and it stands out on a street of much bigger homes. It's proof that the right size comes from good design, not from adding more rooms.
Whether it's large or small, the right size home is the one designed around you.
