Why we're not yes men
The best homes come from honest conversations, and we think that's one of the most valuable things we can offer.
Many of our clients come to us with ideas of their own, and that's a great place to start. Often, in the first or second meeting, they'll tell us something like, "We've got some ideas, but you're the designer. We'd like you to guide us." They're looking for help to shape those ideas into something special.
That's a role we really enjoy. Your home is designed around you. Our part is to bring the experience that helps you make the decisions that will serve you best, so you end up with a home that lasts, works beautifully and is completely yours.
Sometimes that means offering a different view. Not to get our own way, but because agreeing with everything rarely leads to a great home. You've come to us for a reason, and honest advice is a big part of what we bring.
These conversations are usually easy. Nobody walks in wanting an argument. People are simply looking for an honest opinion, and an idea often comes with a simple "What do you think?" Sometimes we have an answer straight away. Other times we'll take a little time to think it through and come back with a few options.
Speaking up early matters most when there's real risk involved. Town planning rules are a good example, and the traditional character overlay is one we see often. You might love a home you've seen nearby and want something similar on your site. The overlay has its own rules, though, and if no one raises them early, the design can head in a direction that council is unlikely to approve. Redrawing a design late in the process costs time and money that nobody wants to spend.
So we talk it through at the start. We explain what's likely to be approved, why, and what we'd recommend instead, then find a design that gives you what you love and works within those rules. If you'd still like to explore your original idea, we'll make sure you understand the risks before you decide. It's your home, and those decisions are always made together.
Knowing when to offer a different view, and when to simply listen, is something we've learnt over many years of designing homes. We have our own standards, and we care about every home that carries our name. That's not about being difficult. It's about making sure every client gets the best home we can design for them.
We're not yes men, and that's for a reason. When we suggest another way, it's always with your design and the best outcome in mind.
