Hockey

A flood affected home on the Brisbane River, rebuilt from the ground up and crowned with a bold new upper level that is entirely its owners' own.

When the owners came to us, their Chelmer home on the Brisbane River had flooded on the ground floor more than once. We weighed up renovating against starting again. A new home would have had to meet the flood overlay and be lifted well above the garden, losing the easy connection to the ground that makes a riverfront home so special. So we chose to renovate. The ground floor was completely rebuilt, following roughly the original layout and keeping the home's footing in its garden, pool and courtyards. Upstairs is entirely new: a long, dark clad level under a sweeping roof, with timber lined ceilings, recycled brick, a corner fireplace and walls of glass that open the living spaces to the river. It is a quirky, deeply bespoke home with a dark, moody palette, and the owners put a great deal of themselves into it. They built the dining table, several of the light fittings and a number of other timber pieces throughout the house themselves. Tide Construction brought it all together beautifully, and the result is one everyone involved is proud of.
